Historical and general overview

After the mining industry closed down in the 1970s, Brunssum adapted itself to a changed economic and social reality. New jobs were created and huge investments were made in education and infrastructure. There has been a huge metamorphosis in landscape, municipal values and other areas to ensure that new generations find employment, homes and a future in our region. A unique aspect of the people and industries and businesses in Brunssum throughout the ages has been an internationally oriented outlook and hospitality. Brunssum, situated on the borders with Germany and Belgium, has always been home to many nationalities from all over the world.

At present Brunssum has nearly 30,000 inhabitants, not counting 2,000 military personnel stationed at the Headquarters of the Allied Forces, JFC Headquarters Brunssum. In the field of commerce, recreation, education and health care, Brunssum has a regional function for over 60,000 people.

Ilse Frankenthal Stichting

Ilse Frankenthal descended from a family of music editors in Leipzig. As a Jewish refugee she settled in Brunssum after 1945. She wholeheartedly advised and supported artists of all sorts of schools. Her indispensable authentic love of art stood her in good stead when organizing exhibitions of artistic expression. Since her death, in 1987, her work has been continued by friends, joined in a foundation. Every third year this foundation awards a graphic art price to young artists from the Meuse/Rhine Euregion. The jury is made up of Dutch, Belgian and German artists.
