Historical and general overview

After the loss of the mining industry some forty years ago, Brunssum adapted itself to changes as regarding infrastructure, education, training, but above all mentality.
This is proved by the manufacturing industries and businesses that established themselves in Brunssum after 1965. Enterprises that also determine the look of an internationally oriented region.

At present Brunssum has nearly 30.000 inhabitants, not counting 2000 persons associated with the Headquarters of the Allied Forces, JFC Headquarters Brunssum. In the field of commerce, recreation, education and health care, Brunssum has a regional function for over 60.000 people.

Brunssum Heath

From a recreational point of view Brunssum enjoys international fame because of an area of over 2000 hectares of heathland and woodland. In summer walkers can enjoy views of herds of sheep and the winter season offers langlauf skiers opportunities to practise their sports. The little stream 'Rode Beek', flowing through the silver sand plain, derives its name from traces of iron ore.

Parade Brunssum

The Parade is an international cultural festival, celebrated by folklorists and tens of thousands visitors from all over the world. During a whole week in the month of July visitors can enjoy music, dance, colourful costumes and traditional customs. The multi-coloroured and spectacular parade on Sunday through the city centre is considered by many the apogee of the festival. The Parade is held every leap year since the early 1950s. The next edition takes place in July 2012. For more information visit the website of the organisation.

Ilse Frankenthal Stichting

Mrs Ilse Frankenthal descended from a family of music editors in Leipzig. At the beginning of 1960 she settled in Brunssum. She wholeheartedly advised and supported artists of all sorts of schools. Her indispensable authentic love of art stood her in good stead when organizing exhibitions of artistic expression. Since her death, in 1987, her work has been continued by friends, joined in a foundation. Every second year this foundation awards a graphic art price to young artists from the Meuse/Rhine Euregion. The jury is made up of Dutch, Belgian and German artists.
